“La Palma” is one of two existing mixed media artworks by the iconic painter, bon vivant and well-traveled artist Lambert Maria Wintersberger, the one who always has a special ‘wink’ in his artworks. Here we have work No. 1 - an explosive masterpiece.
Wintersberger created this work on La Palma in the year 1976.
In this mixed-media work, two forces of nature - fire & water | Volcano & Atlantic - come together from both sides, face each other, mirror each other.. Full power & full energy, grace & tenderness, magnitude & space.. EVERYTHING is contained in this work, concentrated in a tiny surface.

La Palma | The island is the youngest of the Canary Islands and, like all the other island of the archipelago it was formed by volcanic eruptions. The island's altitude difference related to its surface is partly enormous and the largest on earth. The Caldera de Taburiente in the north of the island originated from the collapse and abrasion of a lava dome which soared above the ocean in prehistoric time.
In the south of the caldera, a range of hills stretches from the north to the south of the island. It divides La Palma into two parts, the Cumbre Nueva and the Cumbre Vieja, the latter one is geologically seen younger. There is still active volcanism in the southern part of La Palma.
Several climate zones on an island. The chain of hills up to 2000 meters high divides the island into two zones with different meteorological conditions. The trade winds accumulate on the north-eastern peaks, so that the leeward side of the island in the south-west is usually drier and cloudless. Influenced by the trade winds, the changing weather conditions typical of La Palma result in different vegetation zones. As a result, La Palma is home to a wide variety of vegetation that is otherwise only found spread across a large number of vegetation zones.
There are a number of indigenous plants that only grow on this island. In addition, there are plants that used to exist in other regions but have not yet become extinct only on La Palma. The unique climatic conditions and the island's isolated location have made the flora of La Palma something special and declared it a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The declaration as a World Biosphere Reserve is therefore entirely appropriate for this island.

1976 | In the year 1976, also the natural swimming pools "Piscinas de La Fajana" were opened on La Palma.
Piscinas de La Fajana are natural swimming pools on the north-east coast of the Canary Island of La Palma. Located on the steep rocky coast, the natural pools consist of one large and two smaller pools. They are separated from the Atlantic Ocean by concrete barriers and receive their natural water supply from the surf - sometimes gentle, sometimes full of the energy of the Atlantic.
