CASA AL MARE | FRANCESCO SARTORI
There is a magnificent area of Sardinia, nestled along the Costa Verde, that has long been a paradise for children - specially for the children of the miners from Ingurtosu and Montevecchio. It is the former “Francesco Sartori” seaside camp, built in the early 1950s at the initiative of mining engineer Giovanni Rolandi “as a reward for so much dedication, so many sacrifices, and so much darkness in the tunnels.” An imposing complex covering an area of 2,000 square meters, equipped with an aqueduct, a power line, radio communication, telephone systems, and access roads. A futuristic project that was officially opened on May 13, 1956, and described by the press at the time as “the most modern seaside resort in Europe.” When engineer Giovanni Rolandi - the master architect of the Funtanazza colony and managing director of the Montevecchio mine at the time - realized he had generated substantial profits, he proposed, rather than dividing the money among the management team, to establish a colony for the miners’ children, because he wanted them to have a place to spend their vacations. He selected an area 18 km from the Montevecchio mining site - a wonderful location easily accessible to the miners’ families. The former summer resort in Funtanazza closed when the mines shut down, ending its life and, consequently, its existence.
Its story came to an end in 1983, mainly because maintaining the building and grounds was extremely costly. And thats how it is: The most beautiful things don’t preserve themselves - they need care, dedication, and a deep attention to detail so that they can continue to exist and be preserved over time.
