IWC | Jumbo Dresswatch
1970s
IWC - International Watch Co. Schaffhausen | The Boston-born engineer, Florentine Ariosto Jones, founded the "International Watch Co." manufacture in 1868 in Schaffhausen on the “Rhein” (far away from the watch centers of western Switzerland), not by chance. Thundering masses of water tumble over the rocky cliffs of the world-famous “Rheinfall” there. A few kilometers upstream in Schaffhausen, the “Rhein” flows rather leisurely past IWC's studio windows. This is where the legend of a company began more than 150 years ago. Because his business partner Johann Heinrich Moser had invented a system that enabled them to harness the water power of the “Rhein” for industrial purposes and start mechanized watch production. Distinctive originals of timekeeping, this is undeniably the specialty of the watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen in the northeast of Switzerland.
IWC is equally well known for its provocative advertising campaigns. For its image campaign „Fast so kompliziert wie eine Frau. Aber pünktlich.“ (Almost as complicated as a woman. But on time), the company received a complaint from the Swiss Fairness Commission, while the Zurich advertising agency "Wirz" won the Swiss EFFIE in 2001.
Pellaton automatic | The world-famous design of Albert Pellaton's automatic winding mechanism with an eccentric and two large pawls represents a special technical feature. IWC used this automatic in its "Caliber 85" series. Movements of the watch's wearer cause the semicircular rotor to rotate, moving a rocker constructed with two ruby rollers and two large pawls. By moving the rocker, the two pawls wind the gear train connected to the spring core.
