BAUME & MERCIER
Chronograph Lady

1980s
Unlike many other Swiss watch companies, the immediate history of the house of Baume & Mercier began not in French-speaking western Switzerland, but near the capital city of Bern. More specifically, Joseph-Célestin and Louis-Victor Baume founded the "Société Baume Frères" in 1830 in Le Bois, a small village in the Bernese Jura. Under the name "Baume Brothers", the company opened a branch in London. At the end of the 19th century, the company already enjoyed an excellent international reputation and advanced to become a major player in the overseas watchmaking industry. At that time, the company was famous for its chronographs and its models with grand complications. At international exhibitions, the company's timepieces win the Grand Prix ten times and seven gold medals worldwide. Just before the beginning of the 1920s, the director of the company, William Baume and Paul Mercier merge their business. Together, they founded the Baume & Mercier, Genève brand in 1918.
During the "Golden 20s", the brand shapes the entire Art Deco period with its style and has a lasting influence on watchmaking design. Paul Mercier understands the importance of adapting the company to the spirit of the times and creating a willingness to change. The Maison is aware of the importance of emancipation and is constantly inspired by the desires of women.
